Everything you need to know about Antioxidants

October 20, 2016

You might have heard doctors, nutritionists and even skin experts talking about antioxidants and their amazing benefits for the human body. But what exactly are antioxidants and why do you need to know more about them?
Here are all the things you should know about antioxidants!

What are they?
Antioxidants are vitamins, enzymes and minerals that occur naturally in foods such as fruits, vegetables, coffee, tea and chocolate.

Why are they important?
Our bodies produce oxidants (free radicals) to fend off viruses and microbes. Oxidants also get released when our bodies are exposed to cigarette smoke, air pollution, extreme sports and sun radiation. Too much of these oxidants can damage the cells and increase the risk of certain diseases such as cancer, heart illnesses and Alzheimer's. That’s why it is important to consume antioxidants to counteract all the free radicals and oxidants.
In addition to that, antioxidants are important to enhance the body’s natural defences and immune system, therefore decreasing the risks of infections and illnesses.

Where can we find antioxidants?
Fresh fruits and vegetables are rich sources of antioxidants. They are found especially in colourful fruits and vegetables such as green beans, corn, cantaloupe, mango, tomatoes, watermelon, berries and strawberries. As a rule, the more colourful the fruit or vegetable is, the more antioxidants it contains.
Other great sources of antioxidants include whole grains, cocoa, black pepper and coffee.

What are the most common types of antioxidants?
Vitamin A
Sources: carrots, pumpkin, broccoli, sweet potato, tomato, plum and apricot.
Vitamin C
Sources: orange, lemon, green pepper, broccoli, leafy green vegetables and strawberry.
Vitamin E
Sources: nuts, seeds, whole grains, leafy green vegetables and vegetable oil.
Selenium
Sources: fish, red meat, whole grain, eggs, chicken and garlic.

What is the best way to consume antioxidants?
The secret is to have a healthy and balanced diet, rich with fruits, vegetables and fresh juices. We highly recommend drinking Al Rawabi Pomegranate juice, Red Grape juice and Berry Cocktail, which are great sources of antioxidants. It is also important to eat 5 balanced meals a day and keep an active lifestyle.
